More information... When you get a close look at a cycle helmet they don't look as if they can provide enough protection to your head if you have a major accident on your bicycle.
Sometimes I pick up speeds Downhill of 40 MPH/64 KM/H ... You cant tell me 1 inch thick foam padding is going to stop me splitting my head open if I hit a pot-hole in the road at 40 MPH.

i would take my chances with a helmet. one inch of foam and plastic is better than zero inches of foam and plastic. like someone stated before, helmets are like seat belts, they will not stop damage, but they will minimize it.
