Ok, Why does Randle McMurphy pretend to be insane? I know its to get out of the work farm, but is there any ties to the play Hamlet?
Or, would it be easier to do this; why Chief Bromden is pretending to be insane compared to why Hamlet is pretending to be insane? Can you please give me some tips and some answers?
As much as I value the literary greatness of this novel, I think comparing it to Hamlet is a bit of a stretch.
You're accurate in saying McMurphy fakes insanity to avoid the work farm. I think it stops there with him. It was a naive mistake he made that put him in a really unusual situation. And of course, he rises to the occasion and becomes a role model for the other patients. More of a Christ figure than Hamlet, I think.
Bromden's case is a bit more complex. It's not that he's faking being insane. Bromden is the damaged result of his (and our) society. He claims he learned to be "cagey" because his role as a Native American in an ever-changing environment forced him to go undercover and avoid being noticed. He talks about how the "white man" treated him like he didn't exist, so he just took on that role for himself. If they ignored what he had to say, he simply stopped talking. If he didn't like what they had to say, he simply pretended he couldn't hear.
Again, no clear connection to Hamlet, but what Kesey is doing is creating a serious commentary on the way society tends to disregard and cast aside those in the minority. It's called "marginalization" and Bromden has been a victim of it to the extreme.
