Brad Jordan, head of A&R for Def Jam South, was a big success after just a few months on the job; his signing of Ludacris in 2000 paid off in triple-platinum after less than a year. It's not every A&R man who's rewarded for great work with an album of his own, but then again, not every A&R man is also one of the most influential voices in the history of hip-hop. After defining the down South gangsta during the late '80s with Geto Boys, Scarface began a solo career that earned him a couple of gold albums and saw some of the biggest names in rap (2Pac, Ice Cube, Kurupt, Too Short) angling to work with him -- this back when posse tracks were rarities. Scarface fans will recognize quite a few of the usual themes throughout The Fix, like the good-times-and-bad territory anthem "My Block" (complete with an old-school production, '70s style) and "In Cold Blood," a first-person journal entry from a gang-banger. The highlights, though, find Scarface morphing back into Jordan the bottom-line businessman, banking on the familiar names: "Guess Who's Back" is more a Jay-Z track with a little room for Scarface than the other way around, and the same goes for the Nas feature, "In Between Us." And Pharrell from Neptunes takes over "Someday," with Faith Evans adding a little sugar to the chorus to make up for the patented Scarface growl on the verses. Though The Fix has him reaching for the charts as well as focusing on the personal, the inimitable Scarface balances the competing concerns well. ~ John Bush, All Music GuidePerformers: Tommy Mix - Multi Instruments; Mike Dean - Guitar, Keyboards; Tanya Herron - Vocals; Uncle Eddie - Bass; Kanye West - Vocals

The Formula

The Formula

Three years after his solo album The Wildest Wish to Fly, pop producer and songwriter Rupert Hine came back under the disguise of the pseudo-group Thinkman. The three musicians who accompanied him in interviews and lip-sync performances were actors, the whole project becoming a concept revolving around media manipulation. The Formula, Thinkman's first album, sticks close to this idea (the title track begins with the lines "It's an interview/But it's a second take"). During the early '80s, Hine followed an evolution that led him from disturbing art pop to intelligent but more commercial songs. The Formula is pretty much middle-of-the-road but has a harder edge than the singer's previous LP. Songs like the title track "The Ecstasy of Free Thought" and "The Days of a Champion" are fueled by newly found energy and feature the hook-filled melodies that made Hine an important part of England's '80s pop music. More importantly, there are no weaker tracks, no jumping off the bandwagon for a quick one. As far as concept pop albums go, this one is particularly successful. The Fixx's James West-Oram provided guitar tracks and Stewart Copeland (ex-The Police) plays some real drums whenever the producer felt the machine was not enough -- they are both featured on the closer "There Shines Our Promised Land." This album is more than a marketing curiosity, it can be considered as an essential part of Hine's discography. ~ François Couture, All Music GuidePerformers: Stewart Copeland - Drums, Percussion; Lisa Dal Bello - Vocals, Vocals (Background); Rupert Hine - Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals

The Sugar Fix:

The Sugar Fix:

$10.19

In The Sugar Fix, Dr. Richard Johnson, who oversees a pioneering research program, reports on discoveries about how fructose impacts the body—and directly connects the American obesity epidemic to a frightening escalation in our fructose consumption. It comes as no surprise that the sugar is found in processed foods like candy, baked goods, canned foods, and frozen meals in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, but it is also hidden in less obvious foods like peanut butter, egg products, and soups. Many fruits and vegetables contain high levels of it naturally. Dr. Johnson shows how to cut way back on the sweetener by making effective substitutions. The daily meal plans included here contain no more than 25 grams of fructose, one-quarter of the amount the average American now ingests. Rather than the low-carb approach of so many recent diets, Dr. Johnson recommends a much easier to enjoy and stick to formula: 50 carbs, 25 fat, and 25 protein. The immediate benefit of this diet is to help anyone shed excess weight. The additional benefits are even more impressive—reduced risk for such serious health problems as high blood pressure, elevated blood fats, and insulin resistance, conditions directly linked to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and stroke.

SUNSHINE FIX: AGE OF THE SUN

SUNSHINE FIX: AGE OF THE SUN

$13.95

The Sunshine Fix includes: Bill Doss.Additional personnel includes: Derek Almstead, Jayme Huggins, Heather Mcintosh, Neil Cleary.AGE OF THE SUN, the first full-length solo release from former Olivia Tremor Control co-leader Bill Doss is largely a psych-pop pastiche with the puckish wit of XTC's Dukes of Stratosphear albums and the heady experimentalism of the early Soft Machine. The title track sounds like the Cowsills jamming with Syd Barrett, and similarly delightful tunes like the dreamy "Digging to China" dot the album. Unlike the relatively straightforward EP A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SUNSHINE FIX, this oblique concept album (all the song titles and most of the lyrics have to do with the sun) shares the crazy-quilt construction of the Olivias' records, with various instrumental interludes and sonic experiments weaving in and out of the pop songs. One caveat: the final track, "Le Roi Soleil," a 20-minute loop of one vocal overdub from the title track, clashes with the rest of the album, and might have been better moved to a mysterious little limited-edition EP like the Olivias' Black Swan Network releases.

The Stubborn Fat Fix:

The Stubborn Fat Fix:

$16.46

Most diet programs fail because they don't address the underlying metabolic conditions that contribute to increased hunger and weight gain. In fact, they often worsen the problem by cutting calories and causing deprivation that prompts food cravings and leaves dieters hungrier--and heavier--than ever. The Stubborn Fat Fix remedies this by identifying and treating metabolic imbalances with balanced food intake and recommended "indulgences." Based on the results of simple quizzes that uncover and individual's particular imbalances, readers choose between two eating plans, readers enjoy additive-free meat, fish, eggs, cheese, and vegetables, plus metabolism-boosting ingredients such as avocados, vegetable juice, lemon juice, olive and coconut oils. Readers with less damaged metabolisms, including those who have already made metabolic repairs using the basic plan, incorporate "luxury" foods--indulging in ice cream, salty snacks, chocolate, wine or beer, or even bread--to stay on track without feeling deprived. A tailored supplement program, carefully controlled exercise, and stress-reduction techniques complete the metabolic cure.

The Church - Gold Afternoon Fix

The Church - Gold Afternoon Fix

The Church: Marty Wilson-Piper (guitar); Steve Kilbey (vocals, bass, keyboards); Peter Koppes (guitar); Richard Ploog (drums).Personnel: Peter Koppes (vocals, guitar); Steve Kilbey (vocals, keyboards); Marty Willson-Piper (guitar); Richard Ploog (drums).Audio Mixers: Shep Lonsdale; Waddy Wachtel.Audio Remasterer: Don Bartley.Recording information: Ocean Way Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA.Photographer: John Halpern.Gold Afternoon Fix should have been a consolidation of the band`s increased commercial profile and cachet after "Under the Milky Way," heightened by the welcome reissue of the band`s first five albums. Unfortunately, the Church`s original choice for producer -- John Paul Jones, who likely would have helped oversee a total masterpiece -- was rejected, leading to another session with Wachtel. This time the balance between accessibility and art didn`t succeed as planned. The end result is an album that`s sometimes fantastic, sometimes merely there. Some of the singles didn`t help things any -- the first, "Metropolis," is one of the band`s more subtle rockers, with a catchy chorus and some fine guitar, especially at the end, but not immediate first-listen success. The first track on the album as a whole is a different matter -- "Pharoah" is a dramatic start, with the slow builds so favored by the band given a decidedly threatening, ominous twist. After that things move between hit and miss, but there`s enough character coming through to ensure a pleasant listen. "Monday Morning" lightly repeats the waltz-time feel of Starfish`s "Antenna," while "Russian Autumn Heart," Willson-Piper`s vocal lead on the album, is a crisp rocker with the guitarist delivering things in his trademark ragged-but-right fashion. Other general highlights include "Disappointment" and the gentle "Laughing," but "Grind" is the other main keeper on Fix, a slow destructive burn of a song that matches the opening menace of "Pharoah" with a measured downward slide. ~ Ned Raggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. He lays down hard-hitting thug-life scenarios on such tracks as "Safe" and "Keep Me Down," but THE FIX is far from monochromatic. The bevy of producers add something special to each track, from the aforementioned "Keep Me Down"`s clever utilization of an acoustic guitar riff sampled from `60s folkie Tom Rush, to golden-touch crew the Neptunes adding some pop/R&B flavoring (not to mention the sensual vocals of Faith Evans) to the catchy "Someday." Thematically, "Guess Who`s Back" finds Scarface singing the praises of old-school camaraderie with Beanie Siegel and Jay-Z, while the complex sociological analysis of "What Can I Do?" favorably recalls the Furious Five`s classic "The Message." A Fix Back East

A Fix Back East

$14.98

Four years ago, when the Tarbox Ramblers introduced their train wreck of swamp blues, hillbilly, gospel, and woolly folk, the North Mississippi Allstars, Black Keys, Fiery Furnaces, or that Detroit band with the funny clothes, weren't even blips on the screen. Now they're the competition. It's OK, it's a big world, and with A Fix Back East, the Tarbox Ramblers go down into the deep reaches of their frontman's collective American Gothic psyche, and dredge up the ghosts, the faded photographs, the myths and texts of a time that may never have existed in the popular consciousness. This is a much wilder record; yet it's very rawness contains starkly beautiful textures that are drenched in sepia-toned images, and black and white newsreels from the focal point of the ravaged human heart. The album opens with a huge, R.L. Burnside-styled barroom record machine groove. Using the riff from "Honey Hush," and warping it all to hell, Michael Tarbox indulges his iconographic marriage of rural loneliness, backwater holiness, and steaming sex, which, immediately after is dragged through a drunkenly redemptive version of "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord?)" where violins, electric guitars, and echoing drums from time immemorial try to match the grief and longing in Tarbox's convicted voice. But it's right back to hell in the band's caveman read of Dock Boggs' "Country Blues," with a roiling slide guitar all nasty and distorted, like it was calling from the devil's playground. And this is where it all starts. From the elegiac loss and shimmer of the title track, to the backwoods two-step of the American traditional song, "No Night There," to the murderous gutter blues of "Honey Babe," this is a slash and burn affair that holds it secrets close, and offers its dirty treasures abundantly and regally -- if the parades in Robert Frank's The Americans are your idea of majesty. Produced by Jim Dickinson, Paul Q. Kolderie, and Sean Slade, this is the banshee's howl after all the liquor is gone; it's the drunken, lascivious, preacher's moan when he's still in the whorehouse at seven a.m. on Sunday morning; a dying bluesman's final snarl at a world that's left him empty and broke, and a brokenhearted cowboy's last lament -- all rolled into one. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music GuidePerformers: Howard Ferguson - Drums; Robert Hulsman - Drums; Daniel Kellar - Percussion, Violin, Vocals; Johnny Sciascia - Percussion, String Bass, Vocals;

What does it take to bring the entire island of Sodor Railway System to a halt? Just a crack in the track.
