Road Bike Handlebar Replacement?

Hey everyone, recently i picked up a road bike[which is going to be my school bike], but absolutely do not like the way the gears are set up, they seem to be on top of the top tube of the bike and although access to the gears is easy, it is incredibly ugly. I would like it so that the gears/shifters are on top of the bottom tube or on the side like more modern road bikes, and if not that at least at the end of my drop bars. Would would I have to do to get my shifters/gears to be in the place I Want them to be in? would I need to replace the entire handlebar?

If it were me (and it's possible I do more of my own work than you) I would look for a set of down tube shifters on ebay. Caution, they have to the older kind that come with the mounting hardware, ie. a bracket that goes around the down tube. If you can find them, then you will not have to replace your handle bar. You will have to remove the current shifter cables, then pull off the handle bar stem (with handlebar still in place) and then remove the old shifters. Put the handlebar stem back in place, mount the new ebay shifters and re-run the cables. If the old cables aren't in very good shape, spend another $10 to $15 for new cables. OR........... take it to a bike shop and let them do it all!! Good luck. BTW, I agree the bike looks pretty cheap with those shifters up on top.
